Watch: ‘Joburg Hospital Psych ward must be investigated’

Mother disgruntled by how mentally ill people are treated at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.

The Gauteng Health Department needs to respond to allegations of neglect at the Psychiatric ward of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.

This after a mother was disgruntled with the way the hospital handles mentally ill people.

According to a statement she posted on twitter she said, “My son was seen in their casualty and had to be tied up in casualty waiting in the psych ward.

“He waited for three days and was tied up with no help from staff in casualty.

“When he was transferred to ward 260 things were a little better.

“He was eventually transferred to ward 487 after a week, but I was disgusted with the state of the ward.”

Other allegations include:

  • The gate at Ward 487 is held together by a restraint that is supposed to be used on patients.
  • The ward is infested with cockroaches.
  • Sick males and females are mixed together in the ward.
  • Things are broken in the ward, which has bare walls and has been waiting for renovations for 10 years.

“Something needs to be done so I made this video.

“People need to see how neglected and dilapidated a hospital ward of psychiatric patients looks,” she added.

Democratic Alliances (DA) Gauteng Health Shadow MEC Jack Bloom said, “I am concerned by these allegations that need to be investigated.

“Mentally ill patients are very vulnerable and need special care and a decent environment for treatment.”
