#WorldBloodDonorDay encourages people across the world to donate blood

More than a million units donated a year in SA but still not enough.

While the world commemorated Blood Donor Day yesterday, demand for blood in this country continues to grow.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is intensifying its campaign to encourage people to donate blood.

Even though the SANBS collects more than a million units of blood a year, it is still not enough.

High blood demand is usually due to road accidents and other illnesses which put patients at risk of losing their lives.

Blood donations save many lives in this country every year even though it is not enough.

Driven by the World Health Organisation (WHO) World Blood Donor Day is commemorated every year on June 14.

It is an initiative aimed at encouraging people to donate blood and save lives.

Donating blood is done voluntarily and everyone, young and old is welcome to donate.

The theme for this year is, “Thank you for saving my life”.

It focusses on thanking and recognising all those who have answered the call to donate and save lives.
