Family, paramedics survive accident

The ambulance slammed into a car and a tree after trying to overtake.

A family of three narrowly escaped death when an ambulance bumped their vehicle before crashing in to a tree.

The accident happened at the corner of Thibedi and Masupha Street in Orlando East last night.

A black VW Polo driver was about to make a right turn when the ambulance tried to overtake him on the right.

The sirene was not activated when the ambulance was trying to overtake, according to eye witnesses and the driver of the Polo.

The driver of the Polo was travelling with his wife and one child.

It could not be confirmed on the scene where the ambulance was rushing to but it was not carrying any patients.

It had three paramedics who all sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Polo who preferred to remain anonymous expressed his dissatisfaction with the way paramedics handled the situation.

“When paramedics got to the scene, they paid attention to their own and ignored me and my family until I had to complain,” said the angry driver.

It took about 30 minutes for the ambulance which took his wife and child to hospital to arrive after complaining.

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minaar confirmed the accident and said the cause will be investigated.
