Nutrition programme feeds millions

This could be the only meal that the pupils get for the day.

Pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are given a meal at school every day.

The government introduced the multibillion-rand school nutrition programme to feed these children.

According to the Department of Basic Education, the programme reached more than nine million children in more than 20 000 schools across the country.

Children are fed pap, milk, sour milk, beans, soya mince, a vegetables, chicken stew and fruit.

Dr Lanette Hattingh, educational psychologist said that the department’s menu is nutritious.

“99% of the pupils who rely on these meals might be the only meal they will have because there is no food when they get home.

“If they do not get these meals, their concentration levels and willingness to learn will be low.

“Soya mince provides proteins needed by a person.

“It has a large amount of it.

“Pupils need it for muscle building.

“Children also need micro nutrients that help to build their immune system.

“The body has certain nutritional requirements a day.
