Electricity still expected to be an issue for Sowetans

DA encourages residents to pay for services.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) have come out and blamed the City of Joburg for failing to deliver on the promise of free electricity it made to the people of Soweto.

“The failures of the City of Johannesburg Metro Municipality are now coming to the fore,” said Tsepo Mhlongo, MP and Head of Constituency for DA in Soweto East.

This came after the outbreak of service delivery protests that rocked Orlando West last week.

Residents were complaining about the high cost of electricity that comes with prepaid meters.

DA’s Mhlongo said: “We are of the view that the people should pay for services with special exemption granted to the indigent.”

Mhlongo said that proper consultation should take place with the people before installing prepaid meters.

Meanwhile, Eskom has submitted an application to the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) for a 25.3% tariff increase.

Nersa is expected to hold public hearings before taking a final decision on the matter.
