The Gauteng Department of Basic Education opened school registrations from April 21 and said the last day for parents wishing to register their children for admission into Gauteng public schools for the 2016 academic year will be on May 26.
Parents who still wish to apply can go to schools closest to where they reside or work to collect the application forms which must be returned to the school no later than May 26.
Department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said: “We continue to ask parents and guardians to use the specified period for registrations for their children as the demand for space in public schools is increasing annually.
“It is a challenge for the department when parents apply late, and more importantly it reduces their chances of them getting the school of their choice as children will end up placed at a school where there is space available.
“Parents and guardians should remember that admission of pupils is on a first come first serve basis.”
When going to the schools to apply for space, parents will need to provide the school with a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate, proof of the parent’s residential or work address, immunisation card of the child for Grade One, latest report card, parents certified copy of identity document, study permit for legal immigrants and if not a biological parent proof of legal guardianship.
After submission of completed application forms, parents must ensure that the school provides them with written proof with the date and time of submission and then parents will receive an automated Waiting List number on
their cell phone/e-mail or in person from the school, once the forms are captured on the system.
