John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu passes away

Soccer legend loses battle with cancer.

Diepkloof born soccer legend John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu succumbed to a long battle with cancer, yesterday.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder’s death was confirmed by his agent Glynn Binkin on Twitter.

“John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu sadly passed away at 3pm, after a brave battle with cancer.

“May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.

Shoes was a stand out performer of the 1996 African Cup of Nations triumph, were he scored four goals in the tournament.

He is also a former Kaizer Chiefs player from 1988 until 1994 and moved on to play for Fenerbahce and Bursaspor in the Turkish league in 1997 until his return to Kaizer Chiefs in 2003 for a second spell in South Africa.

His last spell was with Alexandra United, a third-tier side and hung his boots in May 2014.

The 49-year-old had 73 caps for Bafana Bafana and scored eight goals.
