Freedom Month commemorated through the Schools Democracy Week

The electoral commission seeks to educate pupils about democracy.

In commemorating Freedom Month, the Independent Electoral Commission is to host the Schools Democracy Week (SDW).

The SDW was launched on April 20 and it will be wrapped up on April 27.

It is a joint initiative between the electoral commission and the Basic Education Department which seeks to educate young people about democracy.

The programme will be rolled out at schools across the country.

The electoral commission will be visiting schools where pupils will be educated about democratic processes and institutions involved.

They will also be encouraged to take part in the country’s democratic process by voting in the upcoming local government elections.

Debates, presentations and mock elections are some of the activities pupils will be participating in.
