Three arrested for impersonating police officers

Suspects denied bail.

Three men were arrested by the Moroka police for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm, impersonating police officers and for attempted murder over the Easter weekend.

According to police’s John Serala, the men are aged between 39 to 43 years of age.

Serala said the men were caught in Chiawelo as they were about to shoot someone over the weekend, however, the police got this information before and rushed to the area.

It is alleged that during an altercation with the police, one of the men got shot and was taken to Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital, where he is currently under police supervision.

The other two appeared at the Protea Magistrates Court yesterday but were denied bail.

Serala said in addition to being found with an unlicensed firearm the men also had police and metro police uniforms in their car and in their clothing sizes.

“Upon our investigation we found that these men have other pending cases of impersonating police officers, however, we are still investigating further.

“We urge residents not to wear police officers uniform even if they find it misplaced somewhere, instead rather take it to the nearest police station or give it to a police officer you know because when caught with it, you will be arrested for impersonating police officers.

“If someone in your family is also a police officer don’t wear their uniform as this will get you into trouble,” he said.

Serala said those residents with relatives who were police officers but have died, are also urged to take that person’s uniform to the police station to avoid it landing in the wrong hands.
