Parents need to be involved

Noordgesig Primary needs parent intervention.

The Deputy Principal of Noordgesig Primary School Colleen Gill said that her school faces many challenges which makes it very difficult to teach.

She said many of the pupils come from homes where they are exposed to drugs.

She also added that some of the pupils experience abuse.

“We have had a child as young as 10 test positive for drugs. We also had a 12-year-old boy who had to go to rehab,” she said.

Gill explained that a lot of the problems that they are experiencing come from home. She said children learn from what they see and will act out what they see.

“Some of our children have been caught smoking chalk. Some have been sexually abused and will end up battling academically. We had a boy who would always mess up his pants as he was no longer able to control his bowl movement because of all the abuse he had experienced,” she said.

The deputy principal also urged parents to work hand in hand with the school.

“We can’t do this on our own, we need parents to step up and assist in all the problems that we are experiencing, charity really begins at home,” she said.
