Power system to remain constrained: Eskom

South Africa’s power system will remain extremely constrained for this week with an extra load or fault leading to load-shedding, said Eskom.

“Forecast for the rest of the week indicates that the system will remain extremely constrained, meaning that any extra load or faults in the system may necessitate the need to go into load shedding,” said Eskom in its status bulletin on Monday.

“Eskom’s ambition is not to implement load shedding at any given day, but because we are operating an old and vulnerable power system, sometimes we do experience technical faults, and this increases the risk of load shedding,” the power utility further added.

It said that it remains important for all customers in the commercial, industrial and residential sectors to maintain or achieve at least 10% electricity savings.

“Eskom continues to make progress with its programme of planned maintenance but the system remains tight. The capacity available to meet demand depends on the number of generating units that are on planned maintenance.”

The utility further urged all South Africans to partner with it to save 10% of their electricity usage throughout the day.

“This will make it significantly easier to manage the power system during this challenging time, while also enabling us to do planned maintenance to ensure the reliability of our plant.”

The utility called on all South Africans to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly. – SAnews.gov.za
