Unemployment rate drops

COSATU says it’s too early to celebrate.

Statistics South Africa last week reported a drop on the unemployment rate in South Africa.

According to reports by Stats SA unemployment rate dropped from 25.4% to 24.3% in the last quarter of last year.

Even though this is not a major change but the announcement was welcomed by many as a beacon of hope.

Despite this drop it is still estimated that there are about 4.9 million people who are officially unemployed in this country.

Union federation COSATU has welcomed this announcement but said it was too early to celebrate because most of the jobs created were temporary.

The union has also pointed out that the issues at Eskom and load shedding might also lead to other problems in the employment rate.
