Police presence felt in problematic schools of Jabavu

Tlhatlogang Junior Secondary School and Morris Isaacson Secondary School had school searches this morning to deal with troublesome pupils bringing in drugs and weapons to school.

This morning the Moroka Police along with other police stations in Soweto, the K9 Dog Unit and the Flying Squad conducted school searches at Tlhatlogang Junior Secondary School and Morris Isaacson Secondary School.

There was also the Youth Desk, Patrollers and the Community Policing Forum of Moroka to assist in the operation and the representative from the Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) Safety Directorate.

Classrooms, pupils and the school premises were searched as the men and women in blue arrived at the schools.

School bags were also raided with dogs that were used to sniff for drugs.

Police’s John Serala, said the purpose of visiting these two problematic schools in the area, was to try and eliminate bullying as some of the children carry weapons and drugs then attack other pupils.

It was also to increase school safety as pupils sometimes threaten their teachers and peers.

The police and the GDE were pleased with the success of the operation as they were able to confiscate various items such as drugs, syringes and cell phones from the pupils.

“This campaign is part of the GDE’s Provincial School Safety Strategy as we want to fight acts of crime in our schools.

“We are working together with the police and Department of the Social Development so that children that are troubled can be be put into diversion programmes,” Solly Mabonga from the GDE said.

A man selling lunch to pupils at Morris Isaacson Secondary School was also arrested after being found in possession of drugs.
