Looting arrests rise

Six minors released into the custody of their parents until their appearance in court.

The number of people arrested in Soweto in connection with looting has gone up to 178.

From that number, six of those are minors and they have been released into the custody of their parents until their appearance in court, said police.

Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said yesterday: “Out of 178 arrested, 83 people had already appeared in the Protea Magistrates Court and their cases were postponed to January 28 and 29.

“The remaining group will appear at the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday (today).”

The people that have been arrested were charged with public violence and possession of suspected stolen goods.
