Shop owners close shop after public violence

Foreign shop owners fear for their lives.

Foreign shopkeepers did not open their shops today following yesterday’s public violence in Doornkop.

The violence was sparked by the killing of a 15-year-old boy allegedly by a foreign shop owner on Monday.

Soweto police communications officer Kay Makhubela said attempts were made by police to protect the foreign shopkeepers from yesterday’s attacks by a community mob.

Makhubela confirmed that shops were broken into and groceries looted.

At least 12 people were arrested for public violence and were charged for stealing.

The foreign shop owner was arrested and will appear in Protea Magistrate Court tomorrow.
