Opening a false case, is a crime

Police warn community not to perjure themselves.

Residents are being warned not to open false cases to cover their actions as this is a criminal offence.

Kliptown police said that, if one has opened a false case and investigations reveal that they have laid a false charge; a case of perjury against them will be opened.

“We have a case of perjury against an adult male (31) from Pimville who had come to the station on January 1 and claimed his car was hijacked.

“It was then later discovered that the complainant who said his car was hijacked, had actually bumped a person while driving and he had not stopped but sped off from the scene with the community chasing after him.

“He further bumped into the back of a taxi where he stopped, got out and when he saw the crowd, fled on foot,” said Ngwenya.

She said the connection of these two cases came together when the first victim came to report a hit and run, which matched the description of the said hijacked vehicle.

The driver of the taxi also reported a reckless and negligent driving against the same driver.

“These are different complainants with different scenes of crime but same suspect.

“This is where the police started with their investigations.

“The man has since been charged with perjury, reckless and negligent driving and hit and run charges,” she said.
