8 car checks to consider before you hit the road

Car and road safety is an all year round issue, and if you’re travelling by road this festive season, make sure your vehicle is in good condition to manage the long drive.

1. Fluids: The oil, coolant and brake fluid can be checked and replenished at any petrol station, and can save you an early breakdown.

2. Tyre tread depth and pressure: The tyre pressure and tire tread depth can also be checked at any petrol station and corrected. Worn tires should  be replaced immediately. Also make sure your spare tyre is in top condition to avoid stopping longer than usual or hijacking.

3. Check your brakes: Brakes should always be checked regularly, but more so before you hit the road. Any slight squeak or scraping sound is an    indication of a brake that needs to be checked.

4. Headlights, brake lights and indicators: These lights are used on a daily basis, and therefore need to be in the best of shape whether you’re    taking a long trip or just traveling to a nearby area. A burnt out bulb is easy to change, and lights that start appearing dim in the dark should  also be replaced long before they die.

5. Windshield wipers: All wipers should be working according to their various speed controls. Wipers that leave smears or foggy patches on your   windshield should be checked and replaced.

6. Safety belts: Check that all the safety belts in your car are in working condition and are easy to access, both at the front and the back seat.

7. Emergency kit: This kit can be put together however you wish, and can include a first aid kit, jumper cables, a torch, tyre sealant or even a fully  charged second cell phone for emergencies. Brush up on the road rules to be aware of road signs you don’t see often.

8. Food: No road trip was ever complete without some of your favourite foods! Make sure there’s a balance of healthy foods in the mix, such as fruits and nuts, and lots of water.
