Passengers to the rescue

A man was helped by passengers when two men attempted to rob him at gunpoint.

A 27-year-old suspect was arrested at Meadowlands Zone Six in the early hours of today for attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Allegedly the victim was approached by two suspects after he withdrew money from an ATM at the local garage to pay a driver that had dropped his child off from Limpopo.

One of the suspects tried to snatch the money from the victim before attacking him.

The suspect produced a firearm during the fight which resulted in passengers getting out of the taxi to assist the victim.

The passengers apprehended the suspect until police came to the scene where the firearm with ammunition was seized.

His accomplice fled the scene and is still at large.

“We encourage the community to be aware of their surroundings when in possession of money around this time of the year”, said police spokesperson Constable Sibusiso Chauke. “Criminals are opportunists and will attempt numerous acts to get their hands on your money or goods.”

Investigation is underway and the firearm will be taken for ballistic test to check whether it was involved in the commission of other crimes.
