School Democratic Week addresses issue of young voters

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and the Department of Education working together to reach future generations so they are involved in the country’s matters.

This week the country is celebrating the second annual Schools Democracy Week which is an initiative by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and the Department of Education.

The campaign seeks to teach young people on democracy matters with the hope that this will later increase young voter registration at election time.

The IEC and the Department of Education state that they have realised that though young people make up the majority of the population in the country, it is only a few that take part in elections.

According to the IEC, it was only 28 percent of potential voters under the age of 30 that voted in the May 7 compared to an average turnout of over 60 percent for those locals aged 40 and older people and 70 percent came from seniors aged 60 and older.
