Things to avoid at swimming pools

Water safety tips for children this spring.

As the City of Johannesburg opened most doors to their local swimming pools this week, Superintendent Charles Masiza of the Jabavu Swimming Pool shared some water safety tips for children so they can be safe at all times when visiting their centres.

  • Do not swim alone even if you can swim so that there can be someone around to assist you should you have an accident or need urgent help.
  • Do not go into water where you cannot see or are unsure of the depth of it.
  • Do not push another person under the water.
  • Do not push each other into the water from the pool deck.
  • No sharp objects are allowed in the swimming pools.
  • No chewing gum in the swimming pool as you might choke on it.
  • No running around the swimming pool.
  • Do not play near the swimming pool especially if you do not know how to swim and do not play near rivers when it’s raining.

Masiza says it is imperative for everyone, young and old to learn how to swim and by following these rules, children can remain safe at their centres.
