Tackling crime

Community urged to work together with police and CPF.

Sector Five Community Policing Forum (CPF) gathered with the community at Tshebedisanong Primary School to discuss issues of crime affecting this area.

The CPF were accompanied by warrant officer Thabiso Phosa of the Moroka police.

Matters that were discussed at the meeting included burglary, robbery, hot spots, street committees, community patrollers and how the community can work together with the CPF and the police to decrease crime.

There was also a discussion on the increase in cars robbing people, schools being broken into and taverns being closed late.

Jabulani Cebekhulu, coordinator of Sector Five CPF said: “We cannot fight crime alone but need everyone to be involved.

“As the CPF we are residents who are assisting the police because we are seeing that there is an increase in crime as the winter season creeps in which we want residents and business owners to be aware off.

“A lot of foreigner shops are also being attacked which is why we want to meet with them to discuss ways of how we can assist each other.”

The CPF said that people should also look out for private cars robbing people and avoid staying at taverns till late to avoid being in fights or being robbed.

Residents were also urged to look out for Molefe Street, Moshoeshoe Street and the Hlengiwe area as these are the most popular hot spots in the area.

Parents were also asked to get buying their children expensive phones because they use them on the streets and then become targeted by criminals.

The community were warned to look out for a white quantum that is robbing people mostly in the central area.

Residents were asked to avoid walking alone in the mornings and evening but to instead walk in groups to avoid being targeted by the criminals.

The CPF also issued out whistles to the community so that they can use them when they are in trouble.

Cebekhulu said even as there is a shortage of cars in the Moroka policing area they would like for each area to have its own patrollers and street committees.

He said residents should also follow up on their cases and that if they get no response, they should go to them and as the CPF and they will try to help you.

The Sector Five CPF were happy with the meeting and thanked the community for the great response to the meeting.
