Learners explore career options in expo

The school was chosen because it was known to be a good school but somehow lost its way through the years and needs to be put back on the map.

21st Century Foundation hosted an Education Uplifting Ikasi Career and Entrepreneurship Expo at Fons Luminis Secondary School in Diepkloof.

21st Century is a company that is aimed at uplifting township schools in terms of resources and expose them to different career streams and entrepreneurship opportunities.

CEO of 21st Century Foundation, Ntombizone Feni said because of the history of Bantu Education, there were barriers that were put in place for learners to be unable to access opportunities and quality education hence they saw the need for the Uplifiting Ikasi programme.

Learners from Fons Secondary filled a classroom amongst people that come from different streams of careers like fashion, music, modelling and business people at large. They were given words of motivation by the speakers and some musical items were rendered as well.

To create a sustainable impact, the programme aim is to find ways to generate income through various initiatives for the school to become self-empowered.

“The only person who will determine their dreams and if they come true is you,” said renowned attorney and award- winning author, Bulelwa Mabasa motivating the learners.

She went on to relate her life story of how she comes from a four roomed house and what she valued the most was the love, warmth and determination which made her who she is today.

Kgomotso Mothamaha who is a Grade 11 learner said, “What I got from the speakers is that nothing is impossible and I am now sure of what career I would like to go into, which is to be a Chartered Accountant.”

Nandipha Khemese, a Photographer and Business woman encouraged the learners to finish with their schooling because even in the creative space, one needs to have some sort of education as a professional.

“Our school is focused on Maths, Science and Technology and with this programme; they are empowering our learners in their career paths.

“Grade nine learners in particular are improving and progressing with the help of the programme,” said the principal of Fons Secondary, Livhauni Sundani.

Learners were given awards for excelling in academics and sports and culture.
