Residents fearful after 4 bodies discovered in Braamfischerville

Police say the victims are believed to be illegal miners, and were found with gunshot wounds.

Following the tragic discovery of four bodies at Braamfischerville , Durban Deep, on Tuesday, September 03, residents say they now feel unsafe.

According to the information provided by ward committee member, Mishack Mokgonne, it is believed that the deceased are illegal miners operating in an old abandoned mine in the area.

‘’As residents of Durban Deep we feel unsafe, these illegal miners have been fighting with each other for some time now.

“Gunshots have become a daily occurrence and we truly fear for our lives and those of our children,” said Mokgonne.

Makgonne has pleaded with the government to intervene and assist in closing off the old mine shafts so that the pandemonium can stop.

Police Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told Soweto Urban News that a case of four counts of murder has been opened after four bodies were discovered in an open veld in Braamfischerville.

“The victims who are suspected to be illegal miners were found with gunshot wounds. The motive for the killing cannot be confirmed at this stage, although it is suspected to be related to a fight between illegal miners,’’ said Masondo.
