Fighting Nyaope with drama

Charmaine Vukeya writes a drama to warn people about the dangers of Nyaope.

After her niece died in jail a month ago, Charmaine Vukeya wrote a drama to educate the community about drugs.

Vukeya said that her niece was high on Nyaope when she was arrested.

“You hear people talking about Nyaope and you don’t take it seriously because it does not directly affect you. When it actually happens to your family that’s when you realise how serious the problem of Nyaope is,” she said.

Vukeya said that her niece died when she was just 22.

Vukeya was given the chance to show her drama at Bopasinatla Secondary School last week.

“I want my drama to change people’s lives – especially the youth. I want to help those who are addicted to Nyaope. Nyaope is destroying our families and the community and we need to stand up and deal with it as a community.

“I don’t want what happened to my family to happen to anyone else,” she said.

Vukeya invited ex-convicts and former drug addicts to motivate pupils.

“The campaign is starting at Diepkloof and I want to spread it to the whole of Soweto. I am looking for people who were addicted to Nyaope and people who have been in jail because of the things they did under the influence of drugs, to help me with my campaign,” she said.
