Local netball club celebrates Mandela day in style

Mscsports donated a netball kit to the young girls who are netball players and a hundred balls for both the junior and senior players.

Mscsports hosted a netball clinic with G&Q Sports Development Academy for Nelson Mandela Day on July 18 at Mapetla Sports Complex.

This was to motivate and support the community while encouraging children to continue playing and taking sports seriously.

Teenagers who partake in netball were given an educational talk about eating healthy and maintaining their lifestyle as well as indulging in exercises to keep fit.

They were also taught about menstrual cycles and food to intake to stay strong during that time of the month.

Mscsports donated a netball kit to the young girls who are netball players and a hundred balls for both the junior and senior players.

Sabatini Ngxekana from Mscsports explained that the reason why they chose netball is that it is one of the largest girl sports in the South African government schools and the largest female sport in South Africa.

“A lot of times people focus on football when it comes to initiatives like this, which is why we thought it would be a great opportunity to bring netball to this sports centre.

“We are very grateful to the academy for making sure that the children are here, I hope this initiative leaves a positive impact in the community,” said Ngxekana.

The ward councillor of Ward 16 graced the event with his presence, expressing how proud he was of such an initiative taking place in his community.

He thanked G&Q management for keeping the children in the community off the streets and away from drugs.

“I am happy as a councillor to have such a fruitful programme and the community is very supportive.

“This will help our girl children to walk away from crime, drugs, and prostitution. We should have such programmes not and only on Mandela Day,” said Mathye.

Mpho Machaba, Director of G&Q Sports Development projects explained that his guiding and coaching of the young ones is a way of giving back to the community and giving what he was not given during his youth days.

“We need more of these initiatives so they can motivate these kids in our communities. We need more companies to come through to support girl children and assure them that they are also important,” said Machaba.
