Diepkloof Square gives back to the community

Management from Diepkloof Square and Nando’s alongside Rena Le Lona staff took part in the gardening initiative where they planted a variety of vegetables in the centre’s garden.

Diepkloof Square in collaboration with Nando’s visited Rena Le Lona Children’s Centre on July 18 to donate essential appliances and kitchen-use materials as a way of giving back to the community.

This was part of Mandela Day festivities which is celebrated annually on July 18.

Management from Diepkloof Square and Nando’s alongside Rena Le Lona staff took part in the gardening initiative where they planted a variety of vegetables in the centre’s garden.

This will go a long way in ensuring food security and sufficiency at the centre for the children.

Matlhogonolo Nke, the Regional Marketing Manager for the Southern Region at Nando’s spoke of how happy they were to have been part of the day.

She said they wanted to celebrate their Mandela Day in a way that benefits the community specifically the children who are beneficiaries of Rena Le Lona centre.

“We just wanted to see what we can do to better our community and its people.

“We are happy to have donated crockery that the centre can use and help fix up their garden so they can become self-sustaining and use vegetables planted to feed all the children they cater for,” said Nke.

The Mandela Day 67-minutes project at the centre became a success. Mlungisi Mvelase, the Centre Manager expressed how happy he was for the centre and the children to have been gifted with materials that are so important for daily use.

“Getting these donations from Diepkloof Square makes us very proud and happy because we will now be able to provide for our children.

“The fridge is just what we have been longing to have because sometimes we would get food donations but unfortunately we had no place to store them, we are happy because now all that is over,” Mvelase expressed.

He also sent out a message of appreciation to the donors and everyone who took part in ensuring that the programme becomes a success.

“Thank you Diepkloof Square and Nando’s, we hope that our partnership will go a long way. Please don’t forget about us along the way, continue assisting and working with us, we appreciate you so much,” Mvelase said in closing.

Sharon Leope, a student Social Worker from the University of Johannesburg is the one who came up with the gardening project that was an activity of the day.

She expressed how happy she was for the project to have been a complete success and that there will now be enough food for the children at the centre.

Mbali Sindane, the Centre Manager for Diepkloof Square also expressed her happiness about how the event went.

She said they would like to do more for the community as a centre not just only on Mandela Day but throughout the year and would like to create a relationship with organisations that are existing and that are for the benefit for the community.
