Doornkop gogo pleads for help after her home was ravaged by fire

The 79-year-old pensioner told Urban News that she doesn't know what might have sparked the fire because she was by herself and none of her candles were alight when the incident happened.

Doornkop resident, Martha Mathe is appealing to the public to help her with any kind of donations.

Following a devastating fire that destroyed her home in April 2023, Mathe has been struggling to recover from the loss of her belongings.

The 79-year-old pensioner told Urban News that she doesn’t know what might have sparked the fire because she was by herself and none of her candles were alight when the incident happened.

She also cannot blame electricity appliances either, since they were without it for months at that time.

“When I got back from Dobsonville, the house had no one in it, so I decided to spend the night at the cottage because I was alone. At around midnight, I heard a loud explosion that sounded like a bomb.

“I got up and went outside, that’s when I saw that there was a large fire and people from the community were trying to stop it. To be honest, I have no idea what could have caused the fire, I’m still mystified,” she said.

Mathe further stated that her life has changed since the tragedy, and she is currently experiencing physical and emotional pain.

“I had assumed that by now, everything would have returned to normal, but I’m still having a hard time getting over my loss because I’m unemployed and the monthly pension I receive is insufficient to help me rebuild my house.

‘I’m the primary provider for everyone I live with so every cent I get I buy food for my grandchildren. I did make an effort to approach the councillor for assistance, but till today I haven’t received anything,” explained Mathe.

Mathe’s neighbour, Thoko Ntsele said it is difficult to witness an old person struggling in such a manner.

“I try to help Gogo Martha when I can, but she needs more help than I can give. Recently, I’ve noticed that she recycles bottles and cans to help rebuild her house, which bothers me because she’s too old for that.

“I really wish someone could help her so that her life can return to normal,” said Ntsele.
