Rates and taxes dispute cause protest

Residents angered by high levies.

Kliptown Flats residents last Tuesday blocked roads, burnt tyres and protested against rates and taxes.

Residents feel that the levies they pay are too high and unfair as some of the flats they live in are not in good condition.

“We want a flat rate and we want unemployed residents to be given maintenance jobs,” said one of the protestors.

Rory Gallocher, the CEO and spokesperson of the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) said they have met with the tenants and are discussing their issues however even after the meeting, monthly payments still need to be made.

“We hold a dim view towards this attempt to hijack these houses.

“These houses have been heavily discounted and monthly payments need to be made,” he said.

He said JOSCHO will not caputulate to criminal activities.
