Local grannies treated to an early Christmas

The day meant to show appreciation to the elderly was organised by Athena's Beauty Spa in partnership with Sisterhood Foundation.

Christmas came early for a group of grannies from Eldorado Park this year. This as they spent the day at Athena’s Beauty Spa being pampered and shown some love this past weekend.

The day meant to show appreciation to the elderly was organised by Athena’s Beauty Spa in partnership with Sisterhood Foundation and was made possible by the young girls who work at the spa and are also part of the foundation.

Alicia Solomons from Sisterhood Foundation said they strongly believe that caring for the elderly is perhaps the greatest blessing they have as it shows them love and care at a very fragile point in their lives.

The day was indeed a blessing to the group of local grannies who spent the day being taken care of by the Athena’s Beauty Spa girls.

They were treated to a massage, manicure and pedicure. Presents were also prepared by the girls as an additional way of showing appreciation.

“Personally I don’t have a grandmother and doing this for these grannies meant the most to me,” said one of the girls from the team, Tamique Badenhorst.

“I shed a few tears here and there because I wished that my grandmother was around to also get pampered. Well I know she would’ve been so proud of me for doing this for them.”

The group of grannies who attended this year all agreed that it was nice to take some time off, relax and be taken care of by the girls. Having not to worry about cooking or any other house chores for the day was something they expressed much appreciation for.

Lucinda Rayners, Athena’s Beauty Spa co-owner said the greatest honour lies in caring for those who who once cared for us and giving them time is the best gesture one can show.

“The greatest gift you can give to someone is your time, because when you give your time you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back but memories that you can always treasure and in turn moments our elderly will never forget,” added Rayners.

Indeed it was all about giving time and making memories for everyone, especially the grannies who are often forgotten because they are the ones wo always take care of the young ones.

“Sometimes the elderly seem to be taken for granted within our community and are not always able to really spoil themselves.

They go through a lot without anyone noticing and as the seniors of the community we felt they deserve a good pamper,” said Badenhorst.

“Nothing warms our hearts more than to see the old and frail happy, relaxed and having fun. It brings us great joy to see those who walked before us happy because they have given so much and made possible the life we have today.”

After all the pampering and relaxing, the grannies were treated to a delicious lunch also prepared by the girls and the team from KCCC Foundation. Before Christmas presents were handed out, the food went down well as it was paired with good conversations and some nice music in the background.

“Thanks to the awesome sponsors of Sisterhood Foundation for their contribution, these sponsors include Thaheera’s Platters, RySky Foundation, KCCC Foundation and Raylene Johnson,” said Solomons.

“Lastly I want to thank all these grannies for coming through, giving us their precious time and for allowing us to do this for them, they are a blessing to us and to many others. I pray that God bless them with good health and many more years to see.”

Annamaria Lechki from RySky Foundation also thanked the ladies of Sisterhood Foundation and Athena’s Beauty Spa for the day well spent with the grannies.

The team from Sisterhood Foundation and Athena’s Beauty Spa are planning on hosting two more such events over the Christmas season to remind the local elders that they are important, loved and appreciated.
