Local learners warned against drug use

This as learners are stepping into a crucial time of their lives, writing exams which are most likely to determine the outcomes of their future.

The MMC for Community Development, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu recently visited Noordgesig Secondary School to engage with learners on issues of alcohol and substance abuse.

With the community having prevalent cases of substance abuse, the purpose of the day was to advise learners, especially the Grade 12s about the dangers of being involved with drugs and how to keep away from them.

During his engagement with the learners, MMC Magwentshu said they should refrain from being associated with any person or behaviour that may lead to the use of substances and alcohol.

“Drugs are destroying the future of our country. This results in users becoming slaves of their own addiction and being unable to reach their dreams. We recognise the urgency and the battle that we are facing when it comes to the use to drugs by young people in our communities. These issues needs us to come together as leaders and parents as we face this battle because we are not planning to lose,” Magwentshu said.

“With the high rate of substance abuse, one would assume that we are fighting a losing battle, but I want to assure you that we are going to win the battle and selling drugs to young children will have severe punishment.

“We cannot treat drug sellers with sympathy because these people are not only killing the future of our learners but they are killing the future of this country.”

The interim chairperson of the African Transformation Movement in Noordgesig, Ashley Louw said the focus was on matrics since their age group is the most vulnerable when it comes to drug abuse.

“Since its exam time, the learners can do with some motivation and advice. So we are grateful to have the MMC for being with us today to shed light on issues that we face every day as communities,” Louw said.
