Local karate team to represent Gauteng in championships

To name a few, Serole Rangongo, Marlene Visagie and Karabelo Maduna won two gold medals for kata and kumite.

Kofukan South Africa took part in a much anticipated Johannesburg Regional Karate Trials that were held in Randburg, Blairgowrie Recreational Hall from October 14 to 15.

The annual karate tournament is held every year with all clubs affiliated to the Johannesburg region battling it out for a spot in the Provincial Karate Championships.

With the electric atmosphere over the two days, Development Karatekas and Elite Karatekas fought for their spot in the Johannesburg Team, and Kofukan team entered 13 Elite karatekas who won medals in their respective divisions.

To name a few, Serole Rangongo, Marlene Visagie and Karabelo Maduna won two gold medals for kata and kumite.

“Our development karatekas also performed extremely well in their respective categories. We entered a total of six karatekas and they all won medals. Tanya Le Roux and Michael Colling were the cream of the crop. They both won two gold medals each for kata and kumite in their respective divisions,” said sensei Thabo Molubi of Kofukan South Africa.

“The standard of karate was very high and every athlete was fighting for a spot in the team. Our team won 17 gold medals, seven silver medals and five bronze medals.

“The results speak for themselves and it shows that we are on the right path in terms of our training.

“All the athletes have qualified to represent Johannesburg at the upcoming Gauteng Provincial Karate Championships that will be held next year February.”

Sensei Molubi also added that they have also been awarded the Johannesburg District Karate colours.

“The Johannesburg Karate Federation also awarded me with an award for my appointment as Karate South Africa Chief Referee for 2023. This was an incredible year for me and my team.”

In August, the passionate Diepkloof sensei travelled to Morocco Casablanca to represent Karate South Africa in the African Continental Karate Championships.
