Motorist arrested for hit and run in Braamfisherville

The officers stopped the vehicle and asked the driver why the windscreen was shattered.

A male motorist was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers over the weekend for culpable homicide and failing to stop at an accident scene in Braamfisherville.

According to a statement by the JMPD Spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, police officers who were patrolling In the Roodeport CBD on Saturday spotted a white Volkswagen Polo with a shattered windscreen, with two occupants inside.

As per the statement, the officers stopped the vehicle and asked the driver why the windscreen was shattered.

“The driver, who is the son of the passenger, claimed that the community of Jabulani, Soweto had stoned their vehicle. The officer further noticed a big dent in the bonnet of the vehicle,” reads the statement.

When the driver was further interrogated, he conceded that he knocked down a pedestrian at Elias Motsoaledi Road next to the Engen filling station in Braamfisherville.

“The officers escorted the motorist back to the scene and indeed found a male pedestrian who was lying dead in the middle of the road,” Fihla continued.

The motorist was arrested and detained at Dobsonville SAPS. He is due to appear in court during the week.
