LCDF coordinator Oupa Mokokoe said South African communities continue to be ravaged by the effects of substance abuse with minimal abatement.

“The most common drug ‘Nyaope’, had many youth hooked because it is easily accessible in the street corners and it is cheap.

“The ripple effects of this drug are not confined to the disruption of social unity in communities, schools and families but also affect the blood stream of the addict,” he said.

Mokokoe said they will be focusing on the effects of drugs and substance abuse, the signs, the long term effect and the places where people can go to seek help.

“Our aim is to make Soweto and other areas a drug and alcohol free country to these young generations.

“The workshop wants to get good results and positive feeds back on the young people’s behaviour in their communities,” he said.

Mokokoe said the community needs look out for the effects drugs have on one’s body and the services that are being offered by other organisations – for example rehabilitation and continuous support through support groups.
