Zos aims at making the music industry work for him

"It is a different skill set all together; it is a mind shift because I work with kids and I have to break it all down to make them understand.”

Zosukumiziswe Zos Ntuli (30), a violinist and DJ from Pimville, despite being a violin teacher and helping children fall in love with playing an instrument aims to make the music industry work for himself.

His love for violin was ignited by his mother who at the age of nine, registered him to a music school at Pimville Community Centre called Wesson. Getting to the school Zos knew already which instrument he wanted to play and stuck with it until today.

He explains that being a violinist has taught him patience and power of being present in your life as an individual.

“You have to spend time with a violin. This has taught me about the power of preparation and always being ready.

“There’s patience in playing a violin and an instrument will tell on you if you do not spend time with it,” Zos explains.

He moved from being a student at the National School of the Arts (NSA) South Africa which drove him more into learning about the classical space. Zos then ventured into conducting violin lessons at multiple schools.

“In 2017 I came back to Johannesburg and I started teaching violin at NSA. I became a freelancer and started DJying but playing alone was not enough to cover my living means,” he said.

“I went on to teach part time at Curro Rivonia, Khayalami Prep and now I am currently teaching at a girl’s school in Auckland Park.”

According to him teaching and playing a violin are two different things and require a patient mind-set.

Teaching on its own has taught him more about being a violinist and he believes that being able to make a four-year-old understand a violin proves his exceptional talent and hard work.

Zos mentions that, “When I go to class, I am not a violinist I’m a teacher. It is a different skill set all together; it is a mind shift because I work with kids and I have to break it all down to make them understand.”

Regardless of the amount of time he spends as a teacher he still wants to make this music industry work for him as a DJ and violinist.

He has worked with Msaki, Brenda Mtambo, Kutlwano Masote and DJ Christos who has been his biggest inspiration since he ventured into DJying.

“I am working on a single EP. The interest in teaching is there but my main focus now is making a name for myself.

“I am at that stage where I want to live through the industry, making it work for me,” he explained.

Zos wants to grow in the music industry and start conducting a one man show and move to eventing. He is currently working on a single that he hopes to release before the year ends.
