It is important to educate teenagers about taking care of themselves through practicing physical self-love on themselves as well as on their friends.

Self-love means having high regard for your own well-being and happiness. It means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others.

Pualina Letladi, Soweto Home Based Caregivers volunteer explained the effects of introducing pampering to young girls.

“This is not only to show them love and pampering, but they should get used to it,” Letladi said.

“We are trying to avoid our young girls going out and seeking beauty and love from people who will later rob them of their youth.”

Nurses with purpose is a US organisation that brings nurses from all over the world to Africa to offer their time and services to under privileged communities.

Story time for the little ones

They have built a three year relationship with the centre through offering health facilities as well as love to their children.

It is true that one of the hindrances that prevent parents from pampering their children is money.

Some are unable to even afford to fix their hair or school uniform, however as little as a R5 nail polish and R15 roll on can help revive confidence in a teenager’s life.

“We confuse pampering with going to expensive salons or buying expensive items. But these young girls can meet and have their pampering day, where they exchange hands applying nail polish on each other as well as fixing each other’s hair,” said Letladi.
