Calm remains as police are on high alert across the country

Taxis were fully operating at major taxi ranks including Bara and Rea Vaya buses operating on their normal schedule transporting people to their various destinations.

No major incidents were reported on major roads in Soweto on Monday morning ahead of the national shutdown.

According to sources, Maponya Mall was operating with only one exit point and one entrance to maintain control over the number of cars coming into the establishment.

It was reported that the roads in Greenvillage and Lufhereng were closed with burning tyres in the early hours of the morning.

Unconfirmed tweets from Soweto Parliament President, Nhlanhla Lux alleged that his house was under attack in the early house of the morning.

“My house just got hit with two bombs, all my neighbour’s windows are shattered imagine my house,” he wrote.

“We beat the EFF at their own game on the streets defending Soweto brilliantly with all the law enforcement on our side so they bomb and kill my entire family because they lost.”

Minister of Police Bheki Cele addressed the media on police deployment, in Mayfair and said the SAPS had arrested 87 people around the country with Gauteng leading the number of arrests followed by the Free State, Eastern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The charges relate to public violence and intimidation, he noted. He added that that it was all hands on decks monitoring roads and communities.

“Up to this point, it does look like the situation seems to be normal. People are going to work especially in places like Soweto and Alex.

“We are working with SANDF, private security and communities especially in KwaMashu, Mlazi, Soweto and Alex.

“We hope that those that will be marching, will do so peacefully. We have no reason to interfere with them,” he said.

Cele further said that over 24 300 tyres had been found and confiscated along strategic points under various bridges and other known hotspots areas.

He said police would remain on the ground in large numbers however called for the police not to exercise harsh force and ensure that citizens and infrastructure are protected.
