The road is currently undergoing repairs and as a result there was flooding over the weekend which also affected the nearby Nancefield Hostel.

Over 400 families in the area were left displaced as a result of the floods.

The visit by government officials comes after the area was identified as one of those in Gauteng affected by heavy floods over the weekend.

According to reports provided by the Department of Human Settlement, the floods left over 400 families in Nancefield Hostel and the surrounding informal settlement displaced.

The officials used the visit to solicit an understanding of the impact of these floods as they toured the area and publicly outlined how the government is going to intervene on measures to assist those affected.

According to MEC Maile, the construction of the bridge on Klipspruit Valley Road may have had an impact on the floods as a result of a stream discarding water to the hostel.

“We have met with the MMCs to make an assessment so that in an event where we need to evacuate people we will be able to do so,” MEC Maile said.

He added that the City has appointed contractors for the refurbishment of the local community hall near Nancefield Hostel which has been vandalised over the years which will be used to place affected families in case of a disaster.

MMC Mabaso also visited the area over the weekend and said a task team had been formed between the Gauteng Provincial Government and the City of Joburg aimed to redevelop hostels.
