The purpose of the march was to raise concerns regarding foreign nationals working in the area.

This also meant applying pressure to the South Africa government and private companies to abide by immigration laws.

“Foreign nationals must only be employed for rare skills jobs. Further than that they must transfer skills and all the non-rare skill jobs must be prioritised for local South Africans,” said Thabo Ngayo, National Coordinator for Operation Dudula.

Operation Dulula is a self-appointed watchdog on the issue of illegal immigrants. Its main objective is to ensure that jobs and business opportunities go to South Africans and the organisation seeks to drive out undocumented immigrants.

“We are looking also at the township economy where spaza shops and food stalls in Bara should only be reserved for locals,” added Ngayo.

The organisation refuted claims that it is xenophobic with Ngayo saying they are fighting for the South African law.

“We are also helping these foreign nationals by sending them back home, to go fix their inequalities and fight against their autocratic leadership. The same way we are doing for our country,” Ngayo concluded.
