Nkabinde who was a bishop in the church was described as a staunch traditional man who did not compromise where tradition and culture are concerned.

They said although he was a straight-talker, he always has great humour and respect for both the young and old.

“We thank God for the blessing that is Bab’ Nkabinde. To have an elder that is 105 that is still so healthy is rare.

What we can learn from him is humble and respect.

“And that is who he has been to our church, a will of wisdom and we thank God for this life,” said Bishop Zanele Nxele.

The former reverend recently turned 105 last month and has over 30 grandchildren and great-grandfather.

According to the family, their grandfather who was born in 1917 lived in Piet Retief but moved to Sophiatown where during the 1950s he was part of the forceful removals under the apartheid regime and was relocated to Meadowlands where he has spent much of his elderly years in the township.

“It has been a long journey. Many of Mkhulu’s children have passed on, even our mother is late but we are happy that today we get to honour one of our own and say thank you to our father and grandfather.

“We appreciate his presence in our lives and thank that his church was able to give such a powerful service in his name,” said family representative, Betty Nkabinde.

The elderly grandfather was praised for his cognitive and physical abilities with many saying it was a marvel to watch.

His granddaughter, Nombuso Nkabinde shared that Nkabinde was still able to take walks to Dobsonville and visit local areas where he played his betting games to pass time.

“We always jokingly say he is a legend because it’s not something that you see every day. We have been really blessed. He has installed values that I still carry with me even today.

“He taught me the bible and I know whenever I come home, that’s what we will do together. I consider him my father and we pray that God blesses him with many years,” she told Urban News.
