The Madibane Comprehensive High School learner and member of the Soweto Cycling Foundation received a carbon bike from Gill on November 1 and is ready to take over the upcoming 94.7 Joburg Cycle Ride by storm.

Lesego Matjila’s new carbon bike was handed over by Gill.

Matjila started her cycling journey two years ago when her coach, Lebgang Matona asked her to join their cycling team.

With the guidance from Matona, she has moved up the ranks, competed in various cycling completions and developed a competitive edge.

“It is not easy to be a female cyclist because most of the time I compete with males and I have to work extra hard to win the competitions.

“I love this sport since it enables me to motivate young girls and show them that being a girl is not a boundary to reaching our dreams,” Matjila said.

When asked about her highlight in the sport, Matjila enthusiastically replied, “It was at the South African champs, it was my first time racing but I managed to win the race.”

“I feel very lucky to receive this gear and bike because it has great features, now I will be able to achieve the targets I have set for myself as a young female cyclist.”

Matona said their team is pleased for Matjila as she is about to make history in the sports and they hope she wins more competitions and bring achievements home.

“When we introduced cycling five years ago we encouraged both young boys and girls to be part of our team and not to limit themselves.

“Fortunately we are now able to get the attention of various businesses and sponsors. This is positively impacting the future of our young cyclists and we are grateful,” Matona said.

Mohummed Saloojee, brand manager of Gill said this is a result of their business giving back to the community and encouraging young people in sport to extra work hard.

“Matjila has competed with a lot of cyclists who are twice her age with the best equipment and still gave them a run for their money and this why we are positive that the new bike and gear will change her life as a cyclist,” Saloojee said.
