A social market for small and struggling local businesses

The market will showcase individuals or small medium enterprises that are looking to reach a new clientele and expand their brands.

Social entrepreneur and activist, Tlotli Matlotlen Kubyana is calling on all creative entrepreneurs and artists to partake in the inaugural Mzansi Connects T-shirt Social Market in November.

The market will showcase individuals or small medium enterprises that are looking to reach a new clientele and expand their brands.

“The event is all about local brands, creative entrepreneurs encouraging other entrepreneurs around kasi business owners who’re struggling in silence with issues of confidence.

“We want to forge a strong network and start friendships through motivational sessions sharing various topics, tips and advice,” he explained.

Although the event is called a T-shirt market, it will also feature a plethora of stalls consisting of art pieces, local brands and hand/home made products as well as service stalls for tattooing, body piercing, and photo-shoots.

Kubyana shared that the idea was born out of his own struggles as an entrepreneur. He started the t-shirt business in 2003/2004 however encountered a number of stumbling blocks on his journey.

“To be totally honest, being a start-up for over a decade has been hard and very challenging for me. My issue is not the lack of viable ideas, but not having enough funding,” he said.

“My main aim is for us to revive and revitalise our neglected ambitions, visions and dreams from all these draw-backs, because being an entrepreneur or running a business is a terrifying journey.”

The 39 year- old creative said he wanted to grow the event to be the heartbeat of township entrepreneurial hub beyond being a standard flea market. He further added that he hoped the event would become a monthly get- together that embodies networking.

“What makes us different is the fact that we aim to create various resources like an App to link producers to buyers, create a hardcopy print hand-out catalogue for entrepreneurs to flourish and one day have a conglomerate of community-based businesses, founded by this particular event to encourage local brand consumers goods and services eco-system of creatively and collaboratively support our dreams.”
