Park vandalism must stop now – councillor

Vandalism worries councillor.

Chiawelo Ward 11 councillor Meisie Maluleke is worried about the vandalism taking place at the newly constructed Chiawelo Park next to the train station.

The park which was launched two years back had features such as palisade fence, a soccer pitch, trees, flowers and children’s play area but now all the features have been broken by unruly residents.

“We developed this park for beautification of our area and not for people to vandalise it and steal materials to sell at scrap yards, we want this vandalism to stop now.

“Because if those responsible they don’t stop, then we are heading nowhere in the development of this area, they are costing us and setting us back financially and we cannot allow that.”

Johannesburg City Parks communications manager Jenny Moodley said they are working around the clock to deal with problem of community parks vandalism.

“We have launched the park rangers campaign in the city to deal with such issues of vandalism, we need residents to come forward and work hand in hand with us in fighting this issue.

“Our park rangers are working hand in hand with Johannesburg Metro police Department (JMPD) and local police, so if residents see anyone carrying any material that might belong to the park, they have the right to report that particular person to the local police station with no doubt.”
