Tersia Mdunge, Corporate Social Investment Manager said, “It is a continuation of a partnership with the various taxi associations to offer financial education to the women in the associations.

“After this engagement, we are hoping that members and residents will have a better understanding of our non-life products and how to mitigate risks.”

Its purpose, according to Mdunge, is to help equip individuals and business owners with the skills they need for better financial decisions.

The event covered pertinent issues of estate planning and the drafting of a Will, budgeting, and gave an overview of non-life insurance and the importance of having a policy.

“We are happy to be partnering with women owned businesses. Despite tremendous obstacles that women entrepreneurs face such as limited access to financial information, assets and resources, they continue contributing to local economies.

She said through the initiative, they would be able to interact with women and be able to refer them to relevant NGOs within the community and domestic courts.

She further added that it was an opportunity to make them aware of the services available to them at the police station.

Santam’s partnership with the taxi industry recently saw them sponsor the elective conference of the United Taxi Association SA as it elected new leadership in its women’s structures in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Social Development leader of the women’s division under the association, Julia Vilakazi said she was happy that the partnership had finally made its way to Soweto.

Vilkazi is among the top executives working in the taxi industry where she also serves as the treasurer for the Johannesburg Gauteng Taxi Association.

“I have been a member of Bara City taxis for 34 years and today, here we are leading in key positions. But we are no different, all the women that are gathered here, have something to offer despite challenging circumstances,” she said.

“We thank Santam for recognizing us as women working in the taxi industry and empowering us. When I started in the industry, there were few women but today many of us now serving within the structures in executive positions, many of whom are sole breadwinners due to the senseless killings of our partners which forced us into the industry,” she concluded.
