The trail set to begin in September will look to train and harness talent of young netball enthusiasts who are without proper playing teams in a bid to “revive the dying sport” in the community.

“When I started volunteering for the NPO almost three months ago, I found a group of young girls who were at the time training alone and I came on board as a coach to try and guide them.

“And essentially we want to grow the number as our priority and get them off the streets.

“Part of our aim is ensuring that we mobilse these young girls because our community is not actively involved when to comes to sports especially for girls,” Moloi explained.

The talent search will be looking for players from 12 to 20 years old who will form part of those two teams the NPO is looking to develop or even more teams depending on the outcome.

“As an organisation that primarily caters for children, the bigger picture is to prevent possible drug use, teenage pregnancy and other social ills through sports and move them into an environment where their talents and passions are nurtured,”

The 36 year-old DK based coach who currently has over 20 girls training with her has been working with the EKHC NPO as a volunteer said it was saddening that girls in sports were not prioritised compared to boy children.

“I found them training alone. I believe that alone speaks to the level of discipline that they have.

“I came in to do the basic touch-ups, mentor them and really motivate them that they are not defined by their backgrounds,” the mother of three told the publication.

“Moloi shared that post trails, the plan of course is to put them through rigorous training, dietary assistance and will look into a tournament in the following months.

The NPO is based at the Diepkloof Hall and offers a full programme which features sports training, arts and culture and support groups.

“There is so much to be done, sponsors would enable us to turn this into a success. Any sort of netball equipment, which includes balls and bibs, would be highly appreciated.

“Sometimes we need transportation or fruit packs. We appeal to the community and business community to chip in and invest in our girl children,” she concluded.
