Strike over, as drivers report for work

Rea Vaya bus drivers back at work.

Gauteng Traffic Police welcome the agreement reached by City of Johannesburg (COJ), South African Municipal Workers Union (SAWMU) and Piotrans.

The Reya Vaya bus drivers’ strike is over and the City has confirmed operations will proceed as from today.

Drivers are expected to transport passengers today from 5am throughout the day as per schedule.

Since Monday passengers were stranded, inconvenienced and frustrated.

“Some taxi operators took advantage of the situation and started to overload passengers, unlicensed drivers transported desperate passengers in un-roadworthy vehicles,” said Obed Sibasa, spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP).

Sibasa said some passengers were dropped off on freeways, which is extremely dangerous, fatal and also illegal.

It was reported that some of the issues were drivers demanding an increase in meeting times allocated to them and representation from unions and not shop stewards.
