The skate park was for many years not in a good state which meant that local aspiring skaters had no proper facility to utilise.

Sam Khumalo from Skate Society decided to take action and contacted Red Bull to come and assist through their DIY programme.

Through this initiative, the brand works with residents in developing the skating infrastructure for local communities.

“Red Bull DIY is a global initiative that strives to support local skate communities in a sustainable and credible way.

“The idea is not only to assist in the development of their skate spots, but also to give local skaters a platform to showcase their talents and DIY creativity,” explained Phiko Mditshwa from Red Bull.

The rebuilding of the Pimville Skate Park was completed in April and local young people and skaters played an active role in the process.

The DYI initiative is unique in a way that it gives local skaters a chance to get their hands dirty and put on some actual work in the rebuilding process.

Participants performs during Red Bull DIY in Johannesburg, South Africa on May 14, 2022.

They did this with the help and guidance of DIY expert, Pieter Retief who is also a skater himself. Shongani Mhlongo, Thato Moet and Ntokozo Mono are some of the local skaters who were involved in the project and worked tirelessly in making sure that it becomes a success.

Not only will this provide them with a state of the art skate park, but it will also inspire a new generation of skaters from Pimville and the whole of Soweto to take up skating.
