‘Modeling my passion’ Mihlali

“I've been doing modelling for 3 years now and I've become a better version of myself. It has helped nurture and build me as an individual.”

The 18-year-old Mihlali Mzilwa from Mofolo North is a semi-finalist of this year’s Miss Teen Universe SA.

“I’ve been doing modelling for 3 years now and I’ve become a better version of myself. It has helped nurture and build me as an individual,” she said.

Mzilwa continued to say that it has also enlightened and shown her that a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. I should always be willing to help people, the youth in particular.

Her interest in pageantry stems from the fact it opens or creates a lot of opportunities for young girls and it helps build their confidence and personality.

It makes them strive to make an impact in people’s lives and to dream big without placing limits on themselves.

“My biggest motivation is my mother.

She has taught me that life won’t always go the way I have planned. I’ll always come across storms and challenges but I should always use that as a motivation.

“That woman has been my motivation and role model since day one,” Mzilwa said.

She continued to say that her mother taught her that there’s nothing that prayer doesn’t fix.

She should live the word and pray without ceasing because where there is God there is light.

She is extremely excited and feels blessed by making it as a semi-finalist in the Miss Teen Universe SA pageant.

“I pray to God that I make it to the finals or even get the honour of being crowned the queen because of how amazing this pageant is.

“It redefines beauty and helps young girls to believe in themselves. It shows young girls that the sky is not the limit if there are footprints on the moon,” she said.

Mzilwa continued that your voice as a young woman can change the world. The founder and director of the pageant is the lovely Ntombi Gumede she has learnt and keep learning so much from.

“I have learnt that in order for one to take up space, they need to be confident in what they do. If your dreams don’t scare you, they are too small. I entered the pageant full of doubt.

“I took a leap of faith and by the grace of the lord and made it as a semi-finalist,” Mzilwa added.

She also said that in her journey so far she has learnt to stop caging and shaming herself because of what the society pictures as a perfect woman. She has seen that all dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.

“One thing I’d advise a young girl who would like to join modelling is that they shouldn’t compare themselves. There’s a lot of competition within the industry that you’d end up feeling small. Have courage and believe in yourself,” she said.
