Matriculants from Eldorado Park Secondary benefit from partnerships

Olivia Sivanesan from MUFG Bank shared that their partnership with MANCOSA came after the launch of the Meraki Project on March 27, last year. The Meraki Project launched the multipurpose sports centre, community vegetable garden and an education centre at the back of Eldorado Park Secondary School.
When the matric results came out for the Class of 2021, interviews were held with ten learners from Eldorado Park Secondary in order to select the four beneficiaries of the bursaries by MANCOSA.
“It wasn’t about finding ‘A’ students but it was about finding students who were motivated and those who had the drive regardless of their disadvantaged backgrounds,” said Sivanesan.
Nompumelelo Sithole, Chloè Williams, Kaylene Thompson and Jamaludin Badat are the four matriculants who were chosen for the bursaries.
“The courses that we chose are those that we felt were for them. A lot of the students came in and said that they wanted to be teachers, and we had to sit with them and find out their interests and things that motivated them, that is how we helped them choose the courses,” added Sivanesan.
MANCOSA offered the bursaries, and MUFG paid for the student’s registration fees. The four matriculants are already studying and have all of their textbooks. Two are studying towards a degree and the other two towards a higher certificate.
“The bursaries have conditions because of the accountability and responsibility of the students. The agreement is for them to get 60% and more in every module in order to proceed to the next year. The bursary holders will also volunteer their time in the community vegetable garden and will receive certificates of attendance, this is the way they will be giving back to the community. At MANCOSA, we believe that if you can dream it, we can take you there,” explained Sooraya Ebrahim from MANCOSA.
According to Dr. Cynthia Oliphant, TJH Business Solutions took two more learners from the 10 who were interviewed and they will be doing a higher certificate, NQF Level 5 for Occupationally Directed Education,
Training and Development Practices for one year. They also sponsored two other learners from the ten interviewees with laptops.
MUFG also got in Amviral Group to repair the desktops at Eldorado Park Secondary’s computer lab and installed internet for learners to use for research purposes.
“It’s all about team effort and it is through these partnerships where we can uplift and create great possible impact to our generation and hopefully it can be passed down to the next generation,” concluded Ebrahim.
