“As with all our other projects, our responsibility is to also educate the mothers-to-be about their pregnancy journey to ensure it is pleasant,” said Camagwini Rebe, the Marketing Manager.

The speakers included a Gynaecologist, Obstetrician, Paediatrician, Midwife and Psychologist who discuss pre-natal to post-natal issues and stigmas that surround pregnancy. The initiative will now be conducted bi-annually.

“One of the stigmas is that women do not need to attend the clinic at the early stages of their pregnancy. It is quite important for woman to visit a Gynaecologist or the clinic during their early stages of pregnancy, if not, this might lead to complications in pregnancy,” said Dr Ally Morudu, a Gynaecologist/ Obstetrician Specialist at Tshepo Themba Private Hospital.

It was also made clear that women need to get their reproductive systems regularly checked to make sure everything is okay and to detect any problems at the early stage. “I believe it’s important to see the doctor when you pregnant because if there is a problem it can be seen at an early stage. As a first time mom there are things you don’t know like how to deal with a heart burn and how regular you will experience them. When I was 6 months pregnant my child got tangled in the umbilical cord which would have been a tragedy if I didn’t see the gynaecologist,” said Nhlawuleko Baloyi.

“Any woman can see a Gynaecologist or Obstetrician Specialist if they can afford it, if not, they can go to the public clinic, where they can see a Midwife and do a risk grading. Females from the ages of 12 years upwards can visit a Gynaecologist as soon as there are biological challenges in their reproductive system,” concluded Rebe.
