Smith shared her excitement by saying: “It is a big achievement, especially after Covid, the children, parents and teachers were just so excited.” This achievement comes after two years of not having sports at the schools due to the pandemic.

According to Smith, the sports days were broken over a three-day period. Heerengracht Primary School had their intra-house sports which took place the Wednesday and Thursday, the finals were on the Saturday with the inter-school sports.

“Saturday was just an exciting day; our sports master was jumping high with the trophy. In previous years they would make it into the Top 5 and now we will be the top school in Eldorado Park. We had about 100 children participating in the finals,” explained Smith.

From the school, about 17 children qualified to participate in the District Games.

“It was a very good outcome and it was a result of all the hard work that everyone at school put in. One person cannot claim this achievement, it was a collective effort from the security guards, to the ladies preparing the meals, the teachers who made sure that the children were training and even the bus driver. This collective effort gave us this result and brought a lot of joy to us, we are very grateful for the trophy,” said sports master Kubyana.

The acting principal also highlighted the importance of sports and the role it plays in developing children holistically. She added that in the next term they will start with the winter sporting codes such as rugby, hockey, netball, and soccer.

Smith shared that the final sports day was a huge event and the little Grade R and Grade 1 learners did not qualify to participate, therefore the school will be hosting a Novelty Race for the learners on March 5. Smith said that all the Grade R and Grade 1 learners who will be participating will receive certificates of participation and the school is inviting all parents and residents to support their event. Tickets are being sold at the school. If you would like to know about the novelty race, you can contact acting principal Priscilla Smith on 072 2728 682 for more information.
